Gardens bring to mind the beauty of the country and peaceful living. Even though many of us live in the city we can still bring a touch of nature to our homes by indoor vertical gardens that we create.

Urban gardens and vertical gardening is a way to bring nature to big urban cities. It gives us the feeling of over coming the concrete and buildings that limit the space and city environment. Today many people have found creative ways to incorporate plants in their city spaces. You can look up and see flowers and plants on windowsills; as well as way up on the top of buildings a tree that’s part of a roof top garden.

Your children will enjoy being involved with your organic gardening endeavors. Toiling together in the garden brings your family closer together and offers many different opportunities to learn new things and instill green values.

In the urban environments you can find many people are taking to container gardening as a way of bringing nature into their apartments. Folks like myself even make little gardens on their terraces during the spring and summer. In short gardening reconnects us to a natural environment in a non natural setting.

As more and more high risers go up we find Urban gardening and agriculture becoming quite a normal thing. With Urbanization world wide there is less and less fertile land to cultivate gardens. As a result even societies beyond the Cities world wide are starting to use the idea of vertical vegetable gardening to make more food sources available. It give impoverished areas a change to grow fruits and vegetables as a means to help feed the hungry. Recent studies have been done to show that this idea is spreading to those countries where they are plagued with urban poverty.

Aspirin water has disease-prevention properties that can protect plants. An aspirin and a half, combined with a couple of gallons of water, will do amazing things for your plants. Next, coat the plant with the aspirin mixture by spraying it on the leaves. Try to apply the mixture to the plants at least once in each three week period.

Besides the aesthetics that urban vertical gardening brings it is another partial help for the world hunger problem. Many vacant lots are now becoming community gardens with fruits, vegetables and flowers to help feed the hungry.

Because of limited space many times we find Urban gardens vary in their sizes, shapes and locations. The temperature range of any particular city seasonally will largely determine the type of plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables one can grow in an urban setting. Considering where the city is located some people can have gardens all year long. It is also within reason that one can have a garden indoors all year long in their apartment too.

When helping organic plants flourish inside, it is vital to keep in mind how much light is reaching them. If you want indoor plants, choose specimens that can grow in relatively dark places. If you have a different type of plant, extra lighting can always help.

The main thing about gardening in a city is your environmental factors have to meet those requirements of the plants you choose to grow. If you live in a colder environment as opposed to a tropical one for example it may be better for you to grow broccoli instead of oranges. The amount of light you have in your apartment is also a consideration.

Light and temperature are a large determining factor as to what type of vertical vegetable garden you can have in your apartment or perhaps on your balcony. If you have low light you get low light plants. In order to be successful with urban gardening you have to work around all your environmental factors including things like climate. Once you understand what conditions you are working with within your environment you will be able to grow and maintain the vertical vegetable garden you desire.

Simply as backyard gardens require care so do maintaining vertical garden plants indoors. The first considerations in assuring that plants thrive indoors is you have to adequate light and the proper temperatures indoors. Different indoor plants require different lighting and different temperatures. The next requirements to keep vertical vegetable garden plants healthy indoors is the proper amount of water and humidity. Lastly plants indoors also need occasional feeding and grooming.

Generally when you buy vegetables or flowers at the local plant store they will include tags that inform you how to care for the plant. The tag will explain the light, temperature and watering requirements. if any plants you are looking at don’t have those tags that you can ask the sales person in the plant store the way to care for the plant. At that time you may also find out if its the right plant for your home vertical vegetable garden.

Without a doubt all plants require water. Some more than others.

On the subject of watering your plant like it was previously stated ; it will come with that information on the tag attached to it or stuck in the soil. If not, you can ask how much water the plant needs in order to maintain its health from the store you purchase it from. When you do water your indoor vertical garden the water should be room temperature. If the water is too cold or hot will shock the plant. You want to thoroughly saturate the soil until water comes out of the drain hole on the bottom of its pot.

Plants really do need be fertilized from time to time. Its preferred to make use of one that you will add to the water and dilute. A little goes a long way for a house plant so you have to make sure it is supplement to adequate water and light. Plants feed themselves.

Many of the indoor vertical vegetable garden plants are actually tropical in origin so they require moist or humid air. You can remedy a dry home with a humidifier and can occasionally put the plant in the bathroom or kitchen where it is more humid. It is found that if you have multiple plants grouping them together also creates humidity for them. When all else fails you can always get a saucer fill it with water and then put marbles on top to sit the pot on. Do not let the pot sit directly in the water. To do so can cause root rot. As the water under the marbles evaporates it creates moisture in the air around the plant.

Just like us plants have comfort levels. This includes indoor temperatures that are good for the plants. In general indoor vertical garden plants do well in temperatures between 65 and 75 F degrees inside during the day and 10 degrees cooler at night time. Plants go into shock very easy so it is advisable not to put them in drafts or directly in front of heaters. The same goes for air conditioners.

Dependent upon the kind of plant you’ve got will determine the volume of light it may need. Plants that require low light need a minimum amount of light like at least 4 to 6 hours from some sort of light source. “Medium” or “Indirect” lighted plants means natural light that is not directly on them for 6 to 8 hours a day and “Direct Light” means just that. The plant requires direct sun for at least 8 hours or more a day.

These are merely the basic principles to taking care of a vertical vegetable garden in a home. Should you do the basic fundamentals that are required for a particular plant they do very well indoors. All they need is a little light, water and temperature control to keep them healthy.

Yes, it is easier than you think to grow tropical fruit plants inside your urban home. It just takes just a little understanding how to use some how to use some vertical vegetable garden systems. The majority of the tropical plants that may grow inside are really trees and they will bear fruit. Obviously they do not grow as large as though they were outdoors, however they can grow and bear periodic fruits that you are able to enjoy at home.

Orchid flowers and several other types are tropical flowers that may be grown inside with success knowing how to do this.

Your Very First Consideration

When growing a vertical garden and looking after tropical plants inside your urban apartment or houses may be the atmosphere conditions in your house. Tropical plants need warm and moist air. These are their natural conditions they comfortably grow in.

The following problem is that they need just as much sun light as you possibly can. If you don’t get lots of sun light it might be hard to grow as well as to keep a tropical plant within your house. These tropical types require have lots of sunshine but it doesn’t need to be direct and the use of an artificial grow light system may be precisely what it takes for these kinds of plants.

Start your plants in containers, and then transplant the seedlings into the garden later on. This really increases the survival rate of young plants. This method also gives you the freedom of tightening time periods between each planting. As soon as the mature plants are removed, you can replace them with fresh seedlings.

Next you need to make certain you need to do indoor pollination for this kind of how to use some vertical vegetable garden systems therefore it can fruit correctly. In case your apartment includes a balcony or you’ve got a small backyard then the entire process of pollination will occur naturally. For individuals who have neither a balcony nor backyard you’ll have to enact pollination by hand.

Your very first factor to be able to pollinate your indoor tropical plant is to use a vertical garden technique using a camel hair paintbrush. Using your paintbrush you will transfer the pollen in the flower’s plant or fruit’s antlers towards the stigmatic top of the plant. The transfer doesn’t have to become exact.

All you need to do is jiggle the plant using the brush within the appropriate place which helps pollination to happen. You’ll need a plant which has what’s known as “perfect flowers”. “Perfect Flowers” implies that it’s both male and female parts and is capable of doing self pollination. The jiggling just provides the plant a pollen boost to do this.

There’s no need for chemical intervention if you discover powdery mildew on leaves. Instead, combine baking soda with water and liquid soap. You then want to spray this mixture on your plants one time a week until you notice the mildew disappear. No damage will occur to your plants, and the baking soda is mild and efficient.

One good illustration of a plant you are able to grow in your vertical vegetable garden may be the Natal Plum tree. Carissa macrocarpa (Natal plum) is a great option for indoor vertical garden. It will develop like a shrub but when left outdoors can grow to 18 ft tall. This specific tree in one that grows very well in a vertical garden system. It takes lots of natural or artificial light and is drought resistant.

Drought resistant does not mean to allow it to dry out, it simply means should you miss a watering in your vertical vegetable garden and also the growing medium (soil) is dry it will not die. This tree yields red-colored plums. The Natal plum ought to be fertilized frequently with a decent all-purpose plant fertilizer. It’s better to start this tree from seeds. It’s very hard to grow this plant from clippings

This article will discuss how hydroponics farming technology could be used to farm African Violets indoors or commercially within an acceptable budget. Hydroponic farming is a system that uses soil-less medium to produce most of the produce and fruits available in super markets today, around the World. It uses soil only as a support mechanism.

On it’s natural environment, African violet will thrive by using it’s roots to secure food. It will expand the root network as necessary, in order to feed itself. But with hydroponics, the grower would assume that responsibility.

Once the entire farming mechanism is set up, all that would be required on the part of the farmer is a commitment to tend to the plant indoors. If that is done the farmer can expect a higher than appropriate return in investment. This will work because there is abundant evidence that it does work. Individuals and corporations are using hydroponics to reel in amazing amount of dividend. It is cheaper to use hydroponics production system because it is more effective, it is cleaner and it does not entail a lot of repetitive chores, such as weed watching and insect monitoring. On the natural environment, African violet will require adequate lighting to grow and to glow. That lighting requirement would be met adequately by a well set up hydroponic system.

The use of a proper HID or high intensity charging flourescent light indoors will satisfy the light requirement. For temperature this flower needs 60 to 80 degrees temperature to achieve optimal potential.

For that, the farmer would have to adjust the indoor temperature accordingly. For feeding the plant would be adequately fed via the hydroponics system, the plant would not need to waste time and energy in developing extensive root network, because this mechanism will provide all needed nutrients from a nutrition system that had already been formulated. There would be no need for a separate fertilization system, because all of that is incorporated in the hydroponics technology.

The African violet will bloom with lush, because the possibility of insect attack would be highly minimized. Therefore on the whole the farmer stands to gain significantly. Given that the product would be given all the necessary ingredients needed to blossom, it would be protected from all pesticide, the only option for the plant would be to grow and thrive. The African violet would be happy it will be sweet to the eye, and the farmer will be rewarded financially and emotionally for a job well done. African violets is one of those flowers regarded as a high value product, so the potential for high reward for the farmer is quite good.

Organic gardening is the way of growing vegetables and fruits with the use of things only found in nature. Then, nature does most of the work for you. There are many benefits of growing your own fruits and vegetables with this way. Growing them organically is also easy and you just need to learn some general principles.

Here are the benefits of organic gardening:

1. Organically grown foods are not sprayed with chemicals.

That means less health harming chemicals on the food that you and your family may consume. Keep in mind that pesticides are created with only one purpose, to kill living things. A certain kind of protection might be dangerous. Pest control must be done with utmost consideration to safety; safety in terms of the plants, animals and humans.

On the average, a child ingests four to five times more cancer-causing pesticides from foods than an adult. This can lead to various diseases later on in the child’s life. With organic gardening, these incidents are lessened.

Organically grown foods are nutritious and full of taste although they may not look as colorful and well presented as shop produce.

2. Cost savings

One example of organic fertilizer that you could make use of is as lowly as the stale coffee and coffee grounds. You don’t need to buy chemical fertilizers and pesticides that are expensive. Besides, the main purpose of taking care of vegetables and organic gardens will be defeated if they become “tainted” with pest control chemicals. In organic gardening, pest control relies on a series of strategy, not on a highly toxic chemical. For example, you can plant suitable flowers to attract pest’s natural predators like wasps and lacewings.

Compost can be made using vegetable waste. You can also add tealeaves, coffee grounds, eggshells and banana skins. Although this is a bit more time-consuming than buying prepared chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it would surely be one rewarding activity.

3. Less harm to the environment.

Growing foods organically can protect the topsoil from erosion. As an addition, it has residual effect on ground water. According to The Environmental Protection Agency, 38 states have cases of contaminated ground water.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables is a great way of getting closer to nature. The independence and satisfaction that can come from growing your own food is as rewarding as the peace of mind you have when you know exactly how the food was grown. By doing it, you have participated in safeguarding the future of the next generations.

Many people think the orchid plant cannot be grown indoors. When grown in the wild, the orchid plant often forms a symbiotic relationship with other plants in order to get the nutrients that it needs. The orchid plant, like most other plants, must live in the proper conditions in order for it to bloom. The three major conditions that must be controlled in order for the orchid plant to bloom are water, light, and temperature. The orchid plant receives moisture through its roots like all other plants. Avoid planting the orchid in potting soil, because it does not like to be in standing water. The orchid thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. The orchid will continue to grow without this change, but it will not bloom.

Orchids can be a difficult flower to grow indoors because they are usually found growing in nature. As long as you are familiar with the living conditions that orchids need to grow, then you can grow orchids indoors. Orchids should be grown in a similar way. If wholesale orchids are left in standing water, they will eventually die. Wholesale orchids also need to have the temperature variations of the plants that are grown in the wild. The leaf color of wholesale orchids will indicate whether or not the orchid is getting the right amount of light. Yellowish color leaves mean the plant is getting too much light.

The orchid is a perennial plant that usually has three petals. There are about 30,000 different species of orchids wildly growing worldwide. There three basic types of orchid: epiphytic, terrestrial, and saprophytic. The first of the types of different orchids, the epiphytic orchid, grows mostly in tropic and subtopic regions. The epiphytic types of orchid are the most popular for growing indoors. The terrestrial orchid is the second of the major types of orchid. Many people who try to grow terrestrial orchids attempt to grow them in potting soil. The third of the types of orchid is saprophytic. The saprophytic orchid has underground roots just as the terrestrial orchid does. Some species of saprophytic orchids grow completely underground and never come above. If a person can understand how to grow other plants inside the home, then they can understand how to grow orchids.

Orchids are beautiful flowers that have an amazing effect on people, there is a time in the year that you can feel that orchids are attracting more attention, they are out on florists windows and people can not help themselves but stop and admire this flower that is a delight to have in any house.

Some people say that the power of the orchid comes from its delicate features, from its strong colors and even because of it human qualities, but the fact of the matter is that most people love orchids and try to grow them as best as they can but it is rare to find people who can keep an orchid for long and really know how to take care of these delicate flowers.

In the past orchids were rare and they were abundant only in their natural living habitats, with modern times people have grown used to the fact that almost everything is delivered to every corner of the world and that even the rarest flowers or products are available to them.

Experts estimate that there are around 20 thousand different kinds of orchids, these orchids grow in many different climates and conditions and are found in many different places around the world. Anyone who is serious about growing orchids knows that light is very important, light is critical if you want your orchids to have flowers, you will need to supply the right amount of light and be very careful not to burn the orchid, even though in some aspects the orchid may seem to be very sensitive and delicate, these are actually very strong flowers, and they will survive even without light or ideal conditions, the only thing is that they will only survive and not bloom.

These basic facts brings us to a common sense conclusion, if you are interested in having orchids in your garden you will need to think about the best location for that kind of orchid and with some effort you could provide the ideal conditions for the orchid to grow in your garden.

In order to make the most of the orchids you grow you should have some basic understanding of the three main kinds of orchids you can find, as you probably understand by now, understanding the orchid plant needs will assist you in making it bloom and survive in your environment.

These are three kinds of orchids and the basic treatment that they require. Epiphytes, this kind of orchid plant will enjoy being placed on elevated position, placing the Epiphytes orchid on a high shelf or stand will provide a situation very similar to its natural habitat where it grows on trees.

Lithophytes orchids are, unlike the Epiphytes, better placed on a low space, they are known as orchids that grow on the bases of trees and they enjoy feeding on organic nutrition such as rich organic soil and discomposed mildews. Terrestrials orchids. When speaking of the Terrestrials you should know that they are the conventional varieties of orchids. Place the Terrestrials on the ground and they will plant themselves strongly and take care of their needs.

There is much more information about orchids and many different techniques to grow them better and better, this is only the tip of the iceberg, this basic knowledge is important for anyone who is interested in having lovely orchids in his garden.

Hydroponics and Orchids

Growing and caring for orchids is a very pleasurable experience for any enthusiast. There is however an alternative to growing orchids the traditional way and that is with hydroponics. Hydroponics allows you to grow crops and plants without soil or compost as the roots of the plants are placed in a mineral nutrient solution.

The Babylonians and Aztecs cultures grew plants without soil so technically they were using a form of hydroponics. Our technology and scientific knowledge has improved dramatically since the times of the Babylonians and Aztecs as well as our understanding of the benefits

In their natural environment, plants absorb mineral nutrients from soil when these nutrients dissolve in water. The level of our understanding of the required nutrients has enabled us to artificially introduce them into the plants water supply and as a result the soil is no longer required.

Please be aware that there is a difference between hydroponics and a soilless culture. Hydroponics is a type of soilless culture but other soilless cultures include sand and gravel.

There are many advantages using hydroponics which can be applied to the care of orchids.

No soil – It should be obvious that you don’t need to purchase any soil. No soil means that soil borne diseases are no longer an issue which reduces the need for pesticides.

No weeding required

Watering – It is very difficult to under water an orchid but over watering is a very common problem. Hydroponics removes this headache and at the same time saves water.

Space – Less space is required with hydroponics.

Light – More of the plant is exposed to sunlight. Also, as more of the plant is exposed it is possible to see the roots so identification on any problems is easier.

It’s easy – The system is very easy to set up and once set up it requires very little maintenance.

Growth – The orchid is given the correct nutrients in the correct quantities which means more beautiful and healthy orchids can be grown.

There are obviously many advantages which hydroponics provides. It won’t however solve all the problems faced by the orchid enthusiast. Greater flower yield isn’t always guaranteed and the costs can sometimes be higher than when grown in soil.

Orchid enthusiasts should make an effort to at grow at least a few orchids using this method. They will be surprised at the ease of using hydroponics and it will only increase their knowledge and experience in the care of orchids.

A vertical garden is also referred to as a green wall.

This is either free standing or can be a wall that is part of a building that is completely or partially covered with vegetation. It has a growing medium that could be inorganic or soil. Where the vegetation is normally attached on the wall, it is referred to as a living wall

Types of vertical gardens

and are made of stainless steel, irrigation systems, geotextiles, the growing medium and the vegetation.

Three types of growth media are used in vertical gardens: mat media, loose media and structural media.

Loose media:

Loose media can either be either ‘soil in a bag type’ or ‘soil on a shelf type’ systems. Once the medium is packed on a bag or shelf, it’s then installed on the wall. For these systems the media should be replaced once every year on the exterior or every two years on the interior.

Mat media:

This system is either in felt mats or coir fibre mats. The mat media are thin even when made in multiple layers and therefore would not support a heavy root system from mature plants of more than 3-5 years. These systems are most suited for interiors.

Structural media:

This comprises of blocks that are not loose and are not mats but combine the best features of both. The blocks can be made into various shapes, sizes and thicknesses. The main advantage is that they can last for 10-15 years and be manufactured for low or high water holding capacity required for the plant selected. Other specifications can also be modified to suit the specific plants and the blocks are easily maintained and replaced.

Green facades in Vertical Gardening:

Some of the popular plants in Vertical gardening include, Actinidia, Campsis, Celastrus, Clemantis, Hedera, Heuchera, Lonicera , Wisteria among others.
